Abstract
1,224,038. Heat treatment of aromatic polyester filaments. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. (E. D. Andrews). 2 July, 1969 [8 July, 1968], No. 32487/68. Heading B5B. [Also in Division D1] A multi-stage post-draw heat treatment process for aromatic polyester filaments comprises at least one intermediate heat treatment stage followed by a relaxation stage, in which intermediate stage the temperature is not less than the previous draw temperature and subsequent relaxation temperature, the tension is higher than the relaxation stage tension, and the permitted reduction in filament length is between zero and 3%. The process involves no further stretching, and preferably has two stages, i.e. a setting stage and a relaxation stage. The aromatic polyester filaments are defined as filaments containing at least 50% of a polyester containing at least 90% units derived from the same dicarboxylic acid and diol; filaments containing at least 95% ethylene terephthalate units are specified. The heat setting stage may be performed at constant length, and the relaxation at zero tension. The setting temperature is preferably 200-250‹ C., and the relaxation temperature 200‹ C., although temperatures as low as 100‹ C. may be used. Preferred setting times are between 0À001 and 0À05 mins., and relaxation times greater than 0À05 mins. Filaments and yarns so treated have substantially reduced shrinkage combined with little or no decrease in elastic modulus and tenacity.
