Abstract
1,223,971. Tubular lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 18 April, 1969 [14 June, 1968], No. 19971/69. Heading H1F. A tubular electric incandescent lamp comprising a gas-filled envelope 1 of vitreous material has sharply bent ends 3 extending laterally from the main body portion 2 to prevent the end seals from overheating, the bent ends containing the non-incandescible lead wires to the filament 5 in the main body portion, these lead wires, where they pass the pinched bends 4 of the tube, being in the form of flexible helical wire coils 10 having surface portions embedded in the envelope. In various embodiments a lead wire coil 10 is attached at one end to the filament 5 by means of a spud (13), Fig 2 (not shown), and fits directly on to the straight part 12 of a lead wire at the other end, or the filament may be wound to intermesh with the lead wire coil throughout the length of that coil and either extend to fit directly on to the straight part 12 of the lead wire, Fig. 5 (not shown), or both intermeshed lead wire coil and filament may fit directly on to the straight part of the lead wire, Fig. 6, not shown. The wire forming the lead wire coils has a diameter about twice that of the filament wire. The lamp envelope is of silica and is filled with argon at a pressure of several hundred Torr, the filament is of tungsten and the lead wires are of tungsten or molybdenum.
