Abstract

Cores; moulds; patterns. - Interlocking chain links, particularly of stud type, are cast in a mould of green or baked sand, the mould being in two parts rammed in a machine of ordinary kind. Each half mould is manufactured from a half pattern. Fig. 1 shows a half pattern for making the cope for casting seven links, four horizontal and three vertical. The horizontal members a, b, c, d are of the true form of the finished link, but the vertical members e, f, g are provided with a shouldered recess 18, Fig. 8, to receive a core member C also made in two parts. Upstanding blocks 10, 11, and interconnecting members 9 are provided to form a central sprue-hole, risers, and gates. The drag may be formed from a separate half pattern, or the blocks 10, 11 may be removable so that the same pattern will serve for both parts of the mould. The core C has a groove 19 and stud opening 21 completing the form of the vertical link, and transverse openings 24 completing the cavities for the horizontal links. The links may be poured through the central sprue-hole, or individuallv. Previously made links may be placed in the horizontal cavities, and the mould used for casting connecting links. Sections of chain may be joined by placing the end link of a finished section in an end cavity.
