Abstract

122,349. British United Shoe Machinery Co., (United Shoe Machinery Co.). Oct. 16, 1917. Lasting.-A lasting-machine, such as is described in Specification 14453/97, is provided with means which ensure that, when the machine is stopped, the gripper will be left open. In one construction, Figs. 1 and 2, a brake 12 adapted to engage the inside rim of the usual pulley 6 on the cam shaft 5 is mounted on a pivoted lever 15, which is normally upheld by a spring 13 and has slidably mounted in it a spring-pressed plate 26 arranged to co-operate with a block 25 adjustably secured to a member on a spring-encircled stem 23 passing through a bore in a slide 22. This slide, which is guided in the machine frame, carries a roll 21 and is forced upwards by a spring 19 to maintain the roll in engagement with a cam 20 on the shaft 5. When the treadle of the machine is depressed, the upper wedge-shaped end of a rod 10 is withdrawn from engagement with the plate 26, which is then moved by its spring beneath the block 25. The cam 20 has one high brake-setting point corresponding to the open position of the gripper, and when this engages the roll 21, the block 25, through the plate 26, depresses the lever 15 and applies the brake. In another construction, Fig. 5, the upper end of the rod 10 is adapted to engage a roll 11 on a strap 17 surrounding an eccentric 40 on the shaft 5. This strap carries a radiallymovable detent block 14 backed by a stiff spring 38 and adapted to co-operate with a finely adjustable plate 42 secured to a lever 44, which is pivoted at 46 on a bracket 48 attached to the machine frame. The lever 44 pivotally carries a leather &c. lined brake shoe 54, which is provided with an extension 56 having an opening 57 tn receive loosely a pin 58 fixed in the bracket 48 by a set-screw 59. A tension spring 62 is arranged between the pin 58 and a second pin 60, and adjustable stop screws 64 are provided to engage the pin 58 to determine the position of the brake shoe when released. When the starting treadle of the machine is depressed, the rod 10 is raised and the strap 17 swung to cause the detent block 14 to slide off the plate 42, whereupon the brake shoe 54 is lifted clear of the pulley 6 by its spring 62. When the treadle is released, the block 14 swings by gravity until it meets the plate 42, and, as the block is moved in and out by the eccentric 40, it first clears and then moves downward on to the plate; swings the lever 44, and applies the brake. Specification 122,211 also is referred to.
