Electromagnet 20 controls the flow of a magnetic fluid containing a mixture of magnetic and diamagnetic particles, such as iron and bismuth in a carrier fluid such as ethylene glycol. A second electromagnet 120 Fig. 3 (not shown) of opposite polarity can be provided on by-pass conduit 18 which can be of either magnetic or non-magnetic material.
