A graft polymer is prepared by the free radical polymerization of a homogeneous mixture of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer and a homopolymer of formaldehyde or trioxane or a copolymer of formaldehyde or trioxane with one or more cyclic ethers or acetals. Exemplified monomers are vinyl acetate, methyl methacrylate, styrene and N-vinyl pyrrolidone. The base polymer may have been previously treated, e.g. by esterification of terminal hydroxy groups with acetic anhydride.
