Each sheet printed on by printing cylinder 1 and its duplicator master 128 also receives an impression from one or more selectively set type wheels 28, which are located either in the cylinder 1 or beside it in the duplicating machine. An electric key is provided for each position of the or each type wheel 28, and actuates an electromagnet 20 and mechanical coupling devices to control the setting of the appropriate type wheel 28. Preferably the type wheels 28 are in the cylinder 1, which carries contacts rotating with it and co-operating during setting with fixed contacts. Shaft 30 is rotated stepwise by a Maltese cross drive during setting and wheel 28 is driven with it by engagement of pawl 27 with teeth on shaft 30. Cams on shaft 30 open and close a plurality of switches in succession as the shaft rotates and while the circuit to an electromagnet 20 is broken, in consequence of coincidence of such an opening with a setting made by closing a key, a pawl 21 or 22 is held by a spring out of engagement with its co-operating pawl 27. Energization of the electromagnet 20, however, causes a pawl 21 or 22 to disengage the pawl 27 from the shaft 30, so that the associated type wheel 28 ceases to rotate, and may be locked in register in its thus selected position by a member 34, which moves into the type wheels 28 when setting is complete. Alternatively the type wheels may be mounted on a pivoted carrier outside the cylinder 1 and a sheet printed on by cylinder 1 may be printed on by the type wheels in a separate operation. In this case the type wheels may each be advanced, by a rack and pinion mechanism, linked by a pivoted pawl to a reciprocating member and disabled by insertion of a locking pawl.
