Abstract
1,222,302. Casting processes and machines. NORTH AMERICAN ROCKWELL CORP. 19 Feb., 1969 [19 April, 1968], No. 9040/69. Heading B3F. Articles having bores through them are cast from a metal that shrinks on cooling in a cooled copper mould 12. A cooled copper core 16 that forms the bore of a casting is mounted on a vertically movable arm 36. Cooling water is supplied to the cavities 50 and 19 of the core 16 and the mould 12 respectively. The core 16 is lowered into the mould cavity 30, the projection 64 engaging a groove 62 to locate the core accurately. Melt (e.g. 60-40 brass at 1800‹ F.) is poured into a cup 32 and enters the mould cavity 30 by a runner 34. As soon as the metal around the core has solidified sufficiently to form a self-sustaining inner wall the core 16 is withdrawn, leaving the cast ring to contract freely on cooling.
