Abstract
1,222,133. Detergents; corrosion inhibitors; polish compositions; anti-freeze. GEIGY (U.K.) Ltd. 22 May, 1969 [25 May, 1968], No. 25095/68. Headings C4X, C5D and C5W. [Also in Division C7] 3 - Amino - 1,2,4 - triazole is added to detergent compositions to inhibit corrosion of Cu alloys in contact therewith. The detergent may contain a polyphosphate sequestering agent, e.g. Na 4 P 2 O 7, Na 5 PaO 10 , Na 2 H 2 P 2 O 7 , K 5 P 3 O 10 , NaPO 3 , KPO 3 , "hexasodium tetraphosphate" and "hexasodium hexametaphosphate", and up to 40% of a surface active agent, which may be a polyalkylene glycol derivative of a long-chain fatty amine, an alkyl pyridinium halide, ROSO 3 M where R is aliphatic hydrocarbon and M is alkali metal or NH 4 , an alkali metal alkylbenzene sulphonate, an alkali metal salt of a secondary alkyl sulphate or an alkali metal or NH 4 salt of an alcohol sulphate. In an example, nickel-silver cutlery is cleaned using a 0.5% solution of the composition: 80 parts Na 5 P 3 O 10 , 19À6 Na dodecyl benzene sulphonate and 0À4 3 - amino - 1,2,4 - triazole. 3 - Amino - 1,2,4 - triazole may also be added to polishes to inhibit corrosion of Cu alloys. The polish may be based on water and alcohol, e.g. iso-propanol, and may contain an abrasive such as α-Al 2 O 3 , Fe 2 O 3 , or SiO 2 , or the polish may be based on water and contain 5-30% of a surface active agent, e.g. an alkanolamine or alkali metal salt of a higher fatty acid, lauryl sulphate, Na dodecyl benzene sulphonate or the condensation product of ethylene oxide with an alkylphenol, fatty acid, or fatty amine, and 0À5 to 5% of a gelling agent such as methylcellulose or polyvinyl pyrrolidone of M.W. about 40,000. An anti-freeze composition contains 3-amino- 1,2,4-triazole as a corrosion inhibitor. The composition typically has an aqueous base and contains methanol, ethanol, ethylene glycol or glycerol, the ratio organic compound: water being 0À1 to 0À7: 1, and the amount of triazole used is 0À01 to 5 wt. per cent. The composition may comprise also one or more of benzotriazole, NaNO 2 , NaNO 3 , sodium silicate, sodium benzoate, triethanolamine phosphate, the Na salt of 2 - mercaptobenzothiazole, or metal phosphates, arsenates, arsenites, molybdates and/or chromates.
