Abstract

1,221,902. Solvent extraction of aromatics. LEUNA-WERKE " WALTER ULBRICHT " VEB. 11 Sept., 1969, No. 44863/69. Heading C5E. Aromatic hydrocarbons are separated from non-aromatic hydrocarbons by selective extraction and/or extractive distillation using as solvent a N-substituted-#-caprolactam, optionally in admixture with an auxiliary solvent. Suitable #-caprolactams are the N-methyl, N-ethyl, and N-#-cyanoethyl) derivatives. Suitable auxiliary solvents are water, ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol. Examples 1-4 describe separation of benzene from n-hexane by solvent extraction; Examples 5 and 6 describe separation of benzene and toluene from an aromatic/non-aromatic mixture by solvent extraction (Example 5) or by solvent extraction followed by extractive distillation (Example 6).
