Abstract

1,221,325. Photo-polymerization process for the production of dye images. FUJI SHASHIN FILM K.K. April 5, 1968 [April 6, 1967J, No.16629/68. Heading G2C. Dye images are produced by imagewise exposing a negative or positive silver halide emulsion to electromagnetic waves or particle rays, contacting the exposed emulsion with a reducing agent which is resorcinol or m-aminophenol or a derivative of either or a naphthol containing either two hydroxyl groups or one hydroxyl group and one amino group or one amido group in the 1, 6; 1, 8 or 2, 7 positions, and with a vinyl or vinylidene monomer or a maleate containing an acid or basic group thus polymerizing the monomer in the areas corresponding to the latent silver image and dyeing with a dye having an acidity or basicity opposite to that of the polymer. The silver image which is produced on polymerization may be bleached out before or after dyeing the polymer image. The dye image may be transferred to a receptor sheet by the conventional spirit duplicating process. Specified monomers with acid groups are acrylic, methacrylic and maleic acid and their ammonium, alkali metal and alkaline earth salts and vinyl sulphonic acid and its ammonium and alkali metal salts. Specified monomers with basic groups are vinyl pyridines, N, N-dialkylaminoethyl-acrylates and -methacrylates and vinyl monomers containing quaternary ammonium salts. Monomers which do not contain such groups may be added to the monomer mixture. In the examples, various negative and positive silver halide emulsions are imagewise exposed and contacted with a solution containing alkali, reducing agent and monomer. The silver image is then fixed and the material immersed in the appropriate dye and acid (if a basic dye is used) or a buffer solution ofpH 5À0 (if an acid dye is used). The silver image may be removed by Farmer's reducer and the dye image remaining may be transferred to a receptor sheet. The processing solution preferably contains a sulphite ion. Any dye in the unpolymerized areas is removed by washing with acetic acid or the unpolymerized areas may be removed by washing.
