Abstract

1,221,211. Cyanogen chloride. AGRIPAT S.A. 8 Jan., 1968 [9 Jan., 1967], No. 1009/68. Heading C1A. Cyanogen chloride is produced by sparging gaseous chlorine into a reaction medium of hydrogen cyanide and 17 to 20 wt. per cent aqueous hydrochloric acid. Cl 2 gas is pumped into the reaction medium in a reaction tube 15 from a port 27 via a sparger 28. Gaseous or an aqueous solution of HCN is fed into the column at 22 and heat is removed from the reaction tube 15 by a cooling jacket 20. Reaction can also take place in the gaseous phase in the section 13. Above the reactor a packed scrubbing section 23 can be provided. Water at 13‹ to 25‹ C. trickles downwards into the reaction tube absorbing HCl and HCN while the CNCl escapes from a port 25. Aqueous HCl containing very small amounts of HCN and chlorine and saturated with CNC1 is removed at 26 from the bottom of the column.
