Abstract
1,220,872. Taking up slack in cables. PERARD ENG. Ltd. 17 Jan., 1969 [26 Jan., 1968; 10 April, 1968], Nos. 4101/68 and 17351/68. Heading B8B. [Also in Division H2] A carrier for co-extending looped power cable and fluid hose supplying a mining machine as it transverses a mineral face comprises a support portion 1 attachable to the face conveyer spill plate, a carrier portion 2 secured at 15 to the support 1 and a pivotally mounted roller 4 biased into a closed position, the two said portions and the roller enclosing an area sufficient to accommodate passage of the looped cables therethrough. A pivoted flap 16 above the roller 4 is lifted by the machine operator or by a wedge on the machine as it passes thereby, to permit the trailing cables to deflect the roller 4 downwardly against a spring 5, and enter the carrier. A further carrier 7 for static cables is mounted on the carrier portion 2 and these static cables extending between the carriers form with the spill plate, side walls to prevent the looped cables extending laterally from their path between the carriers. With one end of the looped cables secured mid-way along the face and the other end attached to the machine, the rollers 4 of adjacent carriers are progressively depressed by the cables to accept a single layer of cable as the machine moves from the mid-point to the end of the face, and once again depressed to receive a second layer of cables, forming a loop, as the machine moves back towards the mid-point. In the embodiment of Fig. 4 (not shown), an extension of the roller spindle engages the flap as the roller is depressed, to close the flap. In the embodiment of Fig. 5 (not shown), the carrier assembly is of reduced depth and includes a spring-biased vertical telescopic section supporting the roller and flap, whereby the section may expand as the loop of the cables passes. In the embodiment of Fig. 6 (not shown) the flap is dispensed with and the roller is pivotable about a vertical axis to receive the looped cable, the roller being displaced vertically upwards by the passing loop, in which displaced position the roller is prevented from pivoting.
