Abstract

1,220,788. Esterification of cellulose. KOPPARFORS A.B. 2 June, 1969 [26 June, 1968], No. 27830/69. Heading C3A. [Also in Division D2] Cellulose is treated by removing at least 50% of the metal ions from the cellulose by electrolysis or ion exchange, and the resultant material then treated, in aqueous suspension, with one or more epoxides so as to esterify at least 50% of the carboxyl groups present in the hydrogenform. The remaining carboxyl groups in the hydrogen form may subsequently be reacted with an oxide, hydroxide, salt or free metal of a di- or polyvalent metal e.g. Ca, Mg, Zn, Ba, Sr, Al or Ti. Suitable epoxides are ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, butylene oxide, and vinyl cyclohexane dioxide. A preferred example is a mixture of vinyl cyclohexane dioxide and propylene oxide or ethylene oxide.
