Abstract
1,220,736. Photo-electric cells; photo-multipliers; photo-conductive devices. INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP. 21 June, 1968 [23 June, 1967], No. 29771/68. Headings H1D and H1K. A photo-electric cell having a photo-emissive or photo-conductive coating 18 on the inner surface of a cylindrical glass envelope 14, is provided with a prism or stepped window 12 at which a light beam 10 is directed so that it impinges on the inner and outer surfaces of the glass envelope 14 at more than the critical angle so that the light is trapped within the glass. A photo-emissive cell may be provided with a central anode 20 or may be arranged at one end of an electron multiplier, Fig. 3 (not shown). The photo-sensitive coating 18 may be applied on top of a transparent conductive coating and may be connected to conductive rings (26 and 28, Fig. 2, not shown) arranged at each end of the envelope. The prism 12 may be cemented on the envelope or step ground and polished into the glass. For a one inch diameter tube the glass may be 1 mm. thick, and the edge 12 may extend outwardly by 1 mm. and extend about 1 cm in length. Suitable photo-emissive materials are caesium and antimony, or antimony, potassium, sodium and caesium; suitable photoconductive materials are antimony trisulphide or cadmium sulphide.
