Abstract
1,219,803. Cellular vinyl chloride polymers. TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc. 4 June, 1968 [3 June, 1967; 22 Aug., 1967], No. 26651/68. Headings C3C and C3P. A cellular foam comprises a vinyl chloride polymer cross-linked by 0À1 to 30%, by weight of the polymer, of at least one cross-linking agent which is a compound having at least two polymerizable double bonds in the molecule, the polymer being: a homopolymer of vinyl chloride; a copolymer containing more than 50% by weight of vinyl chloride, or a mixture of thermoplastic polymers containing at least 40% by weight of the above homopolymer or copolymer; the vinyl chloride homopolymer or copolymer having a cross-linking degree (as defined by a method of test) of 5 to 90, and the foam having an average cell diameter of 10 to 500 microns, an apparent density of 0À015 to 0À7 g./c.c. and at least 50% of the cells of the foam being closed cells. The foam may be made by mixing the polymer, cross-linking agent and a foaming agent which is vaporized or decomposed on heating to give a gas, irradiating the mixture with radiation of a wavelength less than visible light and heating the mixture to a temperature higher than that at which gas is liberated from the foaming agent and higher than the softening point of the polymer. In the examples, sheets of polyvinyl chloride mixed together with ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, dioctyl, diallyl, butylbenzyl, or dibutyl phthalate, azodicarbonamide, tin laurate, hydroquinone diacrylate or dimethacrylate, lead stearate, bisphenol A dimethacrylate, TiO 2 , dinitrosopentamethylene tetramine, bis-(#- (meth- or) acryloyloxyethyl) terephthalate, bisbenzenesulphonyl hydrazide, hydroquinone divinyl ether, dibutyl tin laurate or maleate, divinyl benzene, chlorinated paraffin and/or polybutadiene; were irradiated and foamed.
