Abstract

1,219,729. Perforating and tearing webs. SCHWEIZERISCHE INDUSTRIE-GES. 23 May, 1969 [28 May, 1968], No. 26370/69. Heading B4B. A device for advancing a web 1 of material to a wrapping machine and for separating the material into lengths during continuous forward movement of the web comprising a pair of rollers 5, 6 for advancing the web, a carriage 8 adapted to be reciprocated, at least during part of its stroke, at the same velocity as that of the web, a cutter 11 mounted on the carriage for forming a series of transverse slits when the carriage is moving at substantialy the same speed as the web and at least one second pair of driven rollers 16, 17 adapted to be driven, at least part of the time, at a velocity which exceeds the velocity of the web when the latter is advanced by the first pair of rollers. The web is drawn by the rollers 5, 6 from a supply roll over a guide roll 2 and passes between guide plates 3, 4. The carriage 8 is reciprocable on guide bars 7 and is provided with a pair of guide bars 9 on which is slidably mounted a carriage 10 carrying a serrated blade 11. In operation, the blade moves into the web to cut the perforations during the time when the carriage 8 is moving at the same velocity as the web. After the row of perforations has passed the rollers 5, 6, the rollers 17, which are mounted on pivoted arms 18 and are rotating at a higher velocity than the rollers 5, 6, are moved into engagement with the web thereby severing it at the line of perforations. In a modification, the rollers may be in continuous engagement with the web and their speed increased to tear the web. The length of stroke of the carriage 8 may be adjustable and two spaced blades may be mounted on the carriage 10.
