Abstract

1,219,597. Cathode ray tubes. MULLARD Ltd. 30 May, 1969 [29 Nov., 1968], No. 56794/68. Heading H1D. [Also in Division G2] Impairment of the transmission characteristics of an array of optical fibres 1, 2 by radiation scattering is countered by absorbing elements 13 of the same size and shape forming part of the array. The optical fibres have high refractive index glass cores 1 surrounded by low refractive index glass cladding layers 2, whilst the absorbing elements have highly absorbing cores 13 which may, or may not, be surrounded by transparent glass cladding layers 14 of refractive index equal to or higher than that of the layers 2. Cores and elements of square cross-section may be used, and instead of the uniform distribution shown the absorbing fibres may be distributed at random in the same proportions giving an approximately uniform distribution. The fibre plates formed may be used in electronic imaging tubes including image intensifiers.
