Lactones, unsaturated carboxylic acids and derivatives thereof are prepared by contacting an acyclic olefinic, aromatic or heterocyclic compound containing at least one hydrogen atom linked to a carbon atom attached to a double bond with a carboxylic acid or derivative containing a hydrogen atom linked to a carbon atom in the alpha position to the carbonyl group in the presence of pentavalent vanadium ions under substantially anhydrous conditions. 1,219,332.Carbonyl compounds. Carbonyl compounds are prepared by an oxidative-coupling process by contacting an aromatic compound, or a heterocyclic or an acyclic compound, olefinic compound with at least one hydrogen atom linked to the carbon atom attached to a double bond, with a compound containing a carbonyl group, with a hydrogen atom linked to a carbon atom in α- position to the carbonyl group, in the presence of a manganese compound, in a valency state above 2, and an aliphatic carboxylic anhydride. Saturated and unsaturated carboxylic acids, and/or lactones are prepared and the starting materials are hydrocarbons such as ethylene, butadiene, benzene, toluene and xylene, naphthalene, styrene, naphthalene, substituted compounds such as phenols, and heterocycles such as pyridine or quinoline, carboxylic acids e.g. acetic and propionic acids and derivatives thereof such as amides and esters, and anhydrides such as acetic anhydride. Examples describe the preparation of 3- and 4-decenoic acid, ndecanoic acid and y-decenolactone from octene- 1, γ-butyrolactone and n-butyric acid from ethylene, hexa-1,5-diene-1,6-dicarboxylic acid from vinyl acetic acid, o- and p-methyl benzyl acetates from toluene, 2-methyl decanoic and decenoic acids and 2-methyl-γ-decanolactone from octene-1, 2,2-dimethyldodecanoic and α- isobutyroxyisobutyric acid from n -decene- 1. The manganese catalyst is reoxidized either in situ or in a separate reaction stage, e.g. with oxygen, redox salt systems, electrolytically or by peracetic acid when the process is continuous.
