A rope, wire or cable drum of the type wherein the end cheeks or flanges comprise annular components which have folds 39 extending radially or substantially so of the annulus between the inner and outer peripheries thereof is characterized in that the mouths of the folds 39 are wholly or substantially wholly closed at that part of the inner face of the cheek in the region of the inner periphery of the cheek. The mouths of the folds may be closed over their entire length as shown in Fig. 5, or only at the inner peripheral portion as shown in Fig. 13. In a method of forming the cheek, one or more blanks of strip form are fed between male and female die members to form the lateral folds in the strip or strips and at a selected stage in the manufacture the mouths of the folds are closed on the inner face of the cheek at that part which lies adjacent the inner periphery of the cheek. The closing may be effected by a lateral inward squeezing operation on the walls of folds at the mouths thereof. In one embodiment, the complementary faces of the die members are angled so that the strip as a whole becomes arcuate in two planes at right angles to each other. The mouths of the folds are closed and the strip assumes its original flat form but its longitudinal edges remain arcuate. A flat strip of metal is welded to the inner periphery of the cheek and the cheek attached to the barrel of a drum. In a further embodiment, the inner periphery of the cheek is at an angle relative to the longitudinal axis of the drum. In an alternative embodiment, the die members are arranged in such a way that the strip remains flat and straight and the mouths of the folds are closed at one end. A flat metal strip is welded to the periphery of the strip where the mouths of the folds are closed and the cheek strip is wound round a mandrel with the flat metal strip outermost. In this way the mouths of the folds close along their entire length. The outer peripheral edge of the cheek may be recessed, Fig. 23, and an enclosing cap 83 secured thereto.
