Abstract

1,218,731. Pulse radar. COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE THOMSON-HOUSTON. 4 April, 1963 [5 April, 1962], No. 13514/63. Heading H4D. A frequency modulated generator for radar systems in which the transmitted pulses are expanded and the received pulses are compressed comprises either a plurality of oscillators each keyed at a predetermined frequency or a single calibrated variable frequency oscillator, delivering at given time intervals components each at an instantaneous frequency and with such a phase angle that the combination of these components produces an output signal, the frequency of which is modulated according to the predetermined law, wherein said components feed a common utilization device one after the other at determined instants and for a given time duration and wherein furthermore a correction circuit is provided to compensate for the phasing errors which the frequency modulated signal in the utilization device may show with respect to the theoretical signal which it is desired to approximate. As shown, oscillators 01 . . . On are successively connected to a load circuit 2 by switches C1 . . . Cn, .the switches being controlled by a circuit 4 receiving beat signals by a circuit 5 from the oscillators two at a time in the order in which they succeed one another, the circuit 4 also receiving signals proportional to time by a line 6. In order that the signal may have no discontinuities the time during which each oscillator is switched to the circuit 2 is a whole number multiple of the inverse of the frequency of that oscillator. The correction circuit for phase errors submits the signal to a phase modulation in synchronism with the switching rate, this modulation having either parabolic or sinusoidal characteristics.
