Abstract
1,218,622. Track apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 3 April, 1968 [5 May, 1967], No. 16078/68. Heading B7N. [Also in Division H4] An object identification system comprises a transmitter, Fig. 1., including an oscillator 19 providing a signal which is swept from 480 kc./s. to 450 kc./s. and is applied to a device 21 containing four piezo-electric elements resonant at 450 kc./s., 460 kc./s., 470 kc./s. and 480 kc./s., respectively. The output of the oscillator 19 also is supplied direct to the transmitter 23 and transmitted via a coil 29 to a transponder 10 carried by the object to be identified. As shown, the transponder includes two piezoelectric elements 15, 17 so that it has a low impedance at the two corresponding frequencies, e.g. 480 kc./s. and 460 kc./s., which are retransmitted as an identification number in binary form, the resulting oscillations having a slow decay rate. The four frequencies from device 21 are applied to a sequencing circuit 25 which controls a switch 36 to turn on the transmitter for a period of 500 microseconds at the start of each of the four frequencies and at the end of each period to switch off the transmitter and turn on the receiver 27 for a period of 150 microseconds. The output of receiver 27 is supplied via amplifier 31 to a discriminator 32 which also receives a sweep signal from oscillator 17 differing by 15 kc./s. from the sweep signal supplied to the transmitter. The resulting 15 kc./s. difference frequency is supplied to a digital detector 33 and logic circuit 34, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), which (a) provide a digital signal which switches on and off at the frequency of the input providing the input frequency is in the correct tolerance range and (b) provide an output only if the input signal is a true A.C. signal, thus eliminating noise signals. The signals passed by the logic circuit 34 are stored temporarily at 35 and read out either when the received signals cease for more than one sweep, or after a predetermined number of sweeps.
