Abstract

1,218,563. Valves. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 1 March, 1968 [2 March, 1967], No. 9969/67. Heading F2V. A butterfly valve comprises a casing 2, an annular seat whose innermost surface is of frusto-conical or part-spherical shape (11, Fig. 1, not shown), and a closure member 4 which is carried by spindles 6 and 8, the axes of which are offset in relation to the plane containing the peripheral sealing portion of the valve member. Both the seat and the peripheral valve member sealing portion are formed with two mating flat sections 20, so that with the valve member in its closed position (as shown), the flat portions abutt to form a fluid-tight seal, whereas with the valve member in its open position, the flat portion of the valve member peripheral sealing portion crosses the seat at 16 with a clearance therebetween.
