Abstract

1,218,165. Making crown caps; stamping. ARMSTRONG CORK CO. 17 March, 1969 [28 Oct., 1968], No. 13862/69. Headings B3A and B3Q. [Also in Division B8] A crown cap 2 with a protective lip is formed from a circular blank, produced from sheet metal by the coaction between a stamping punch 30 and a blanking die 24, by a free floating forming ram 32, the lip-forming sleeve 36 of which coacts with a cavity 28 of a forming die 27. The top, skirt and protective lip portions of the cap are formed simultaneously. Alternatively, crown caps 2 may be produced by modifying conventional crown caps 2<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 5 (not shown), by feeding them through a sizing die (40), Fig. 5 (not shown), thus altering the sharp, generally horizontal edge to an upwardly directed, protective lip portion.
