Abstract

1,217,959. Sterilising liquids. A.T.A.D. APPROVISIONNEMENT - TRANSPORT AERIEN - DISTRIBUTION. 26 Jan., 1968 [18 April, 1967], No. 4167/68. Heading A2D. In a process for sterilising or pasteurising liquids (e.g. milk or cream) the liquid is heated for less than one second by the friction resulting from the liquid being moved under centrifugal force between relatively moving surfaces. The liquid may be preheated and may be cooled after pasteurisation or sterilisation in a heat exchanger. In one embodiment (Fig. 1) a suitable apparatus comprises a disc 1 rotating in casing 2, the milk being introduced under pressure into the centre of the disc 1 and being frictionally heated whilst moving under centrifugal force to the periphery of the disc to be discharged. In another embodiment (Fig. 7) the apparatus comprises a frustoconical drum 51 provided with helical projections 60 rotating in frustoconical casing 52, the milk entering at inlet 57 and discharging at outlet 59.
