Vehicle washing apparatus for vehicles passing in a direction A therethrough comprises two pairs of brushes 3, 4 and 5, 6, the brushes being vertically mounted on swinging arms 7- 10 pivotable about axes 2 and the first brushes 3, 5 of each pair in their rest position extending in the path of the vehicle to wash at least half the front and then being swung to positions 3<SP>1</SP>, 5<SP>1</SP> to wash the sides, the second brushes 4, 6 of the pairs in their rest position extending in the path of the vehicle but with approach of the vehicle being swung to positions 4<SP>1</SP>, 6<SP>1</SP> so to wash the sides and then swing towards their rest positions to wash the rear. The swing of the first brushes is transmitted to the second brushes by tension cables 20, 23 so that the second brushes are in positions 4<SP>1</SP>, 61 before being contacted by the vehicle. Alternatively the brushes of each pair may be connected mechanically or by a single continuous cable. The axes 2 are spaced by a distance 5 greater than twice the length of arms 7-10. The axes of the brushes may be inclined so that the brushes are gravity biased to their rest position. Also the first and second brushes may be inclined towards the front and rear of the vehicle respectively. The brushes rotate in the directions indicated by the arrows L and R, the direction of rotation depending on the position of the brush. The arms 7, 9 may be extended so that the brushes 3, 5 occupy positions 3<SP>11</SP>, 5<SP>11</SP> in their rest positions, the brushes then washing the whole of the front and rear of the vehicle.
