Abstract
1,216,961. Detecting aerosols. J. H. BURNETT, M. SUCHOMEL, AND W. C. TIPTON. Feb. 4, 1969 [Feb. 5, 1968], No. 5945/69. Heading G1N. [Also in Division G4] In a fire alarm, smoke is detected by an ionization chamber S1 having a pair of electrodes connected to a source of direct current, the voltage of which is stabilized by a Zener diode 1 to give a field strength of about 4 volts per cm. between the electrodes which is said to maximize the effect of smoke on the current through the electrodes. A second ionization chamber S2 having only a small opening to the air compensates for air pressure variations. When, due to the presence of smoke, the electrode current drops below a certain level a normally non-conducting unijunction transistor 9 is turned on to discharge capacitor 5 to trigger an S. C. R. 15 and thereby light lamp L1. Adjustable feedback to the field effect transistor 2 increases sensitivity. Diode 13 protects the circuit from incorrect supply polarity and diode 17 enables incorrect supply polarity to be indicated by lamp L1.
