Abstract
1,216,866. Pyridines. KOEI CHEMICAL CO. Ltd. 10 July, 1968 [13 July, 1967], No. 33003/68. Heading C2C. Pyridine bases are produced by contacting, in the gaseous phase at a temperature of 350-500‹ C., acetaldehyde with ammonia in a weight ratio of from 1 : 0À3 to 1 : 3 and at a space velocity of 200-2000 hr<SP>-1</SP> in the presence of a catalyst consisting of one or more phosphates of aluminium, zinc, magnesium, cobalt, nickel, calcium or lead or a phosphate of two or more of the metals aluminium, magnesium, cobalt, nickel, calcium and lead, or a mixture of such phosphates with silicaalumina which may contain some zinc oxide or cadmium oxide. If desired, the acetaldehyde may be used in a mixture with formaldehyde. The process favours the production of 2- picoline but small amounts of pyridine; other picolines and methyl ethyl pyridines are also formed.
