Abstract
1,216,486. Magnetic compositions. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. 19 Dec., 1967 [21 Dec; 1966], No. 57547/67. Heading H1H. A magnetic composition for forming magnetic cores comprises magnetic particles coated with a heat dried mixture of an alkali metal silicate, Mg(OH) 2 , two refractory metal silicates, e.g. Al and Mg silicates, and polyvinyl alcohol or carboxymethyl cellulose. The coating is formed by slurrying the constituents in water and heating e.g. to 260‹ F. in a rotary drum or by spray drying. The magnetic particles may be 80-83% Ni, 17-15% Te, and 2À15-1À75% Mo, by wt., and may be -120 mesh. The coating composition may contain, for 1000 g. of magnetic particles; 4À93-11À41 g. Na silicate (Na 2 O/SiO 2 ratio 2À84) 6À72-15À45 g. Mg(OH) 2 5À24-12À05 g. colloidal clay 0À62-1À41 g. talc 14À89-24À81 c.c of a 10% polyvinyl alcohol solution or 0À5% carboxymethyl cellulose solution 66-110À2 c.c. H 2 O. The coated particles may contain 0À975- 2À25% by wt. of the coater, and may be sieved through an 80 mesh sieve. Cores are formed by pressing at 200,000 lb/inch<SP>2</SP> pressure, annealing in H 2 at 1000-1200‹ F., and then firing.
