Abstract

1,215,775. Polymerizing vinyl chloride. FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO. 27 Feb., 1969 [8 March, 1968], No. 10679/69. Heading C3P. Vinyl chloride is polymerized in aqueous medium at 0-150‹ C. and 35-350 p.s.i.g. in the presence of a free radical catalyst in the absence of any substantial amount of liquid vinyl chloride by maintaining the water saturated with vinyl chloride and flowing vinyl chloride vapour in at a rate approximately equl to the mite of polymerization; the product is said to have at least 15 chloromethyl end groups per 1,000 vinyl chloride units. A protective colloid suspending agent is preferably used, methyl cellulose being preferred. Exemplified catalysts, are lauroyl peroxide, diisopropyl peroxydicarbonate, potassium persulphate and azodiisobutyronitrile. The vinyl chloride vapour is introduced by connecting the reactor to a reservoir maintained at the same temperature and pressure.
