Abstract
1,215,766. Treatment of hot 50 2 -containing gases. METALLGESELLSCHAFT A.G. 6 Nov. 1968 [7 Nov., 1967], No. 52692/68. Heading ClA Hot gases containing sulphur dioxide are cooled and saturated with water by passing the gases horizontally through a scrubbing apparatus divided into several zones in each of which sulphuric acid is passed downwardly with recycling of the acid in each zone, the dilute sulphuric acid being introduced into the zone adjacent to the gas outlet end of the apparatus, and wherein concentrated sulphuric acid is recovered from the zone adjacent to the gas inlet end of the apparatus, the method being performed without external cooling of the acid during recycling. The cooled gases may be subsequently contacted with active carbon to result in the formation of the sulphuric acid. In the Figure, hot SO 2 -containing gas enters at 1, passes over the bed of packing bodies 3, and cooled moist SO 2 leaves at 11. Dilute H 2 So 4 enters the reservoir 6 at 9, from which it is pumped to the top of the apparatus to a nozzle 4. Each zone has its own reservoir, pump 7 and nozzle, the excess H 2 So 4 from each reservoir being passed, via overflows 8, to the reservoir of the next zone. Concentrated H 2 So, is taken off at 10.
