Abstract
1,214,642. Polyimide bonded laminates; moulding plastic substances. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 5 Aug., 1968 [18 Aug., 1967], No. 38220/67. Headings B5A and B5N. [Also in Division C3] Insoluble infusible polymers may be obtained from a mixture of an aromatic tetracarboxylic dianhydride, diester or tetraester with a urethane or urea derivative of an aromatic diamine Z-CO-NH-R<SP>1</SP>-NH-CO-Z<SP>1</SP> or from a similar urea or urethane derivative of an amino-aromatic dicarboxylic anhydride, monoester or diester, Z and Z<SP>1</SP> being -OY or -NYY<SP>1</SP> and Y and Y<SP>1</SP> being aliphatic or aromatic radicals free from terminal or pendant methylene groups which may together with the N atom form a heterocyclic ring. A prepolymer may be formed by heating at 120‹ C. or above a melt, slurry or solution of the reactants. Fillers, e.g. preformed polyimide powder, glass, asbestos, carbon or metal fibres, abrasives or solid lubricants, e.g. graphite or molybdenum disulphide may be incorporated with the reactants or prepolymer. The prepolymers may be used as moulding powders, e.g. for the manufacture of high temperature abrasives or self-lubricating bearings, or as solutions for casting, coating or impregnating. The evolution of CO 2 or alcohols during curing in the absence of imposed pressure leads to polyimide foams. Numerous reactants and solvents are mentioned. Moulding and laminating.-The prepolymers may be partly precured to evolve 70 to 95% of the volatile material, milled to a fine powder, e.g. 0À045 mm., moulded at room or slightly elevated temperature and high pressure, e.g. up to 700 MN/m.<SP>2</SP> and then sintered in the free state. The application of this technique is illustrated in Examples 18, 19 and 21. In Examples 20, 22 and 23 asbestos felt, carbon fibre mat and glass cloth, respectively, are impregnated with prepolymer, dried and then laminated by compression moulding. In Example 22 the carbon fibres are aligned longitudinal and transverse in alternate laminµ.
