Abstract

1,213,655. Muscle stimulators. MEDICAL & BIOLOGICAL INSTRUMENTATION Ltd. 6 June, 1968 [9 June, 1967], No. 26803/67. Addition to 1,129,142. Heading A5R. [Also in Division H3] A muscle stimulator electrical circuit includes a surging waveform generator 1 connected with a pulse generator 4 to a gating circuit 9 which is in turn connected to an output transformer 15, the gating circuit being controlled by the surging waveform generator in such a way that the output from the gating circuit includes signals at the pulse generator frequency in bursts which are controlled in accordance with the output of the surging waveform generator, and the transformer being so arranged and connected that the output from the transformer (Fig. 4 (f), not shown) includes alternate pulses of opposite polarity at the pulse generator frequency. As shown, a square wave generator 4 is connected with the surging waveform generator 1 through a mixer stage 2 and an output stage 7 to the gating switch 9 which is controlled by signals received from the generator 4 via a delay circuit 11. As in Figure 3, which shows in detail a part of the circuit of Figure 1, the delay circuit comprises a differentiating capacitor 18, resistor 19, and a monostable multivibrator 21, 22 while the gating circuit comprises a bi-stable multivibrator 23, 24 connected through transistors 26, 28, 30, 32 to the anti-phase primary windings of the output transformer 15. The alternate pulses of opposite polarity produced at the transformer 15 are applied from chosen secondary windings of the transformer to body contacting pads arranged to stimulate body muscles. An alternative embodiment (Figures 5, 6 and 7, not shown) includes a free running surging waveform generator (36) and a free running square wave generator (38) providing pulses to the output transformer (46) via amplifying transistors In a final embodiment (Figure 8, not shown) the output transformer has a single primary winding which is connected to the mixed output of a square wave generator (71) and a surging waveform generator (68) via a double pole double throw switch (78) operated by an output from the square wave generator.
