Abstract
1,213,603. Light transmission of glass, improving. CORNING GLASS WORKS. 24 Feb., 1969 [26 Feb., 1968], No. 9674/69. Heading ClM. The light transmission of reduced high purity titanium-oxide-containing glasses is improved by heat treatment in an oxidizing atmosphere so as to oxidize the reduced titanium ion therein. Preferably the glass consists of up to 15% by weight titanium oxide and more than 85% silica and is in the form of the core of a fibre optic with a pure silica cladding. Preferably an oxygen atmosphere is used and heating is between 600‹ C. and 1000‹ C. for 10 to 20 hours. In the formation of the clad fibre, the rod of the Ti-containing glass is surrounded by a tube of silica and drawn downwardly, a reducing atmosphere being used.
