Abstract
1,212,751. Aqueous formaldehyde solutions. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 24 April, 1968 [29 April, 1967], No. 19300/68. Heading C2C. Aqueous methanol-free formaldehyde solutions are prepared by completely or partially reacting a feed mixture of methanol vapour, water vapour and air on a silver catalyst at a temperature in the range from 450-750‹ C., in which the vaporous reaction mixture is cooled to 100 to 200‹ C., accomplished by the indirect generation of steam, the reaction gases are subsequently condensed in several stages and washed with the condensate and finally with water, the steam generated being used to produce the mixture of methanol vapour and water vapour from the corresponding liquids, wherein the heat still present in the reaction gases at a temperature of 100-200‹ C., including the heat of condensation, is taken up with water some of which is evaporated at a reduced pressure, the steam generated at a pressure of less than 1 atmos. is compressed, and used to produce the methanol vapour/water vapour mixture when the feed mixture has been completely reacted or to rectify the methanolcontaining formaldehyde solution when the feed mixture has been partially reacted.
