A system for removing ash and slag from an incineration furnace having a flat hearth 1 comprises a plate-shaped head 2 mounted on the leading end of a tube 3, the tube 3 being journalled in a guiding slide 4, the plate-shaped head 2 being so constructed that pivoting of the tube 3 in the slide 4 while the tube 3 is in the horizontal position causes a straight scraper edge 13 to bear on the hearth 1 and, after pivoting through 180 degrees, for an edge with tines 15 to bear on the hearth 1. A transmisison system (5, Fig. 1), comprising the gear motors for executing the various motions of the tool, namely the motor (9) for raising and lowering, the motor (10) for inward and outward traversing and the motor (11) for the rotating motion of the tube 3 with the head 2, traverses on a track 6 adjacent the hearth 1. In operation, in order to remove slag, the tube 3 is inserted into the furnace and the head 2 lowered with said edge provided with tines 15 facing downwardly. For tearing open the slag it is possible for the head 2 to be repeatedly reciprocated whereupon the tool 2, 3 is withdrawn from the furnace, rotated through 180 degrees so that the straight edge of the head faces downwardly, before being reintroduced into the furnace so that the residue can be withdrawn by the said straight edge.
