Abstract
1,212,482. Air-depolarized cell. ESB Inc. 11 March, 1969, No. 12782/69. Heading H1B. [Also in Division C3] In an air-depolarized cell 21 which has a charging electrode 14 located between two rechargeable anodes 16, the air-breathing electrodes 3 comprise a metallic grid which carries a catalyst composition 17 with a thin sheet of microporous fluorocarbon polymer 11, preferably P.T.F.E., adhering to the composition, the micropores being formed by poreforming particles having a size not greater than 73 microns. The interior porous surface of the air electrode is in contact with the electrolyte and exterior microporous polymer surface permits the passage of gas from the surrounding environment into the electrode. The catalyst composition generally comprises an electrically conductive particulate carrier such as carbon or boron nitride, a catalyst such as Ag, Au, Ru, Rh, Os, Ir, Pd or Pt, and a hydrophobic material such as a fluorocarbon polymer, silicone resins or paraffin wax. When the electrolyte is an alkaline solution, the anode may be Zn, Cd or Fe, and the charging electrode Ni and the grid of the air electrode may be Ni or Ag. With an acid electrolyte, the anode may be Pb or Sb, and the charging electrode and grid may be Nb, Ta, Zr, Ti or Mo. The electrolyte may also be sea-water, in use with a Mg anode. A graphite charging electrode can be used in any electrolyte. The air electrode can be made by adding calcium formate, as pore former, to a P.T.F.E. emulsion which is then dried and reduced to microparticles in a high-speed blender. Paraffin wax is added and the blended mix is formed into sheet material with a rubber mill using a rolling-stripping-rolling procedure. Paraffin wax is then extracted with acetone and the P.T.F.E. sheet sintered. The wet-proofed catalyst composition formed from an aqueous slurry of Pt catalyst deposited on a carbon carrier and a P.T.F.E. emulsion is pressed into a nickel screen and the sintered P.T.F.E. sheet is hotpressed on to one side. The pore former is then removed with warm water.
