Abstract

Heading B3W In a rotary punch the drive to a cutter roll 2 carrying a cutting die 2 and an anvil roll 4, which has a resiliently compressible peripheral surface, e.g. of rubber, or comprises a brush roll, includes transmission gears of non-reducible ratio i.e. the products of multiplying the gear teeth of the driving gears and the driven gears respectively have no common denominator in order to spread the cutting wear circumferentially over the anvil roll. The roll shafts 18, 22 are supported in box frames 21 one of which houses the transmission gearing, Fig. 6 not shown, the other housing a cam drive and gears for shifting the anvil roll axially during its rotation to further spread the cutting wear. A cam gear 34, rotatable on the anvil roll shaft 22, is formed in two sections, with comple mentary faces 36, spaced to form a cam groove therebetween. A follower disc 37 keyed to the shaft 22 includes diameterically opposed studs 38 on which rollers 39 are rotatably mounted. The rollers are located in the cam groove so that as the cam gear 34 rotates it shifts the disc 37 and thus the shaft 22 roll 4 axially back and forth. The hubs 44 of the cam gear sections abut shaft bearings 23 to prevent their axial movement. An elongated slot 43 in the shaft 22 in which a driven gear 32 of the transmission gearing keys allows the axial shifting of the shaft. The rotary punch is followed by a stripper unit 6 comprising a roller 7 carrying a knockout punch 8 and a resiliently compressible stripper roller 9 . Both the anvil roll 4 and the roller 9 are associated with a rotating brush 14 for removing waste material from them.
