Abstract
1,212,344. Accumulator electrode structure. INTERNATIONAL NICKEL Ltd. 19 Feb., 1968 [28 Feb., 1967], No. 9389/67. Heading H1B. [Also in Division C7] An electrode of dual porosity comprises a pack of electrolytically deposited expanded metal grids united at their edges, each grid carrying a porous layer of active metal deposited on to the grid and in contact with the corresponding layers of on the adjacent grids. The layers may increase in thickness towards the middle of the pack. The grids may be spot welded together. A cadmium electrode may comprise copper grids electroplated with cadmium and carrying a porous layer of cadmium or a cadmium alloy containing up to 5% of nickel or up to 1% of thallium, selenium or silver. The outer faces of the electrode are protected by slotted cooper plates spot-welded to the grids or by sheets of nylon woven fabric backed by cadmium-plated copper wire mesh also spot-welded to the grids. Alternatively the grids may be of nickel plated with zinc and carrying zinc sponge as active material or carrying partially oxidized nickel as active material. The plates may be protected from oxidation by a layer of polymer removed when they are put into use.
