Abstract

1,212,165. Non-aqueous polymer dispersions. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 4 Feb., 1969 [7 Feb., 1968], No. 5957/69. Heading C3P. A non-aqueous dispersion of a vinyl ester copolymer is obtained by heating a mixture of: (a) 100 parts by weight of one or more vinyl ester monomers having from 3 to 5 carbon atoms; (b) from 1 to 120 parts by weight of a dispersing, olefinically unsaturated comonomer selected from alkyl acrylates having 6 to 18 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, dialkyl fumarates having 6 to 18 carbon atoms in each alkyl group, and dialkyl itaconates having 6 to 18 carbon atoms in each alkyl group; (c) from 37 to 900 parts by weight per 100 parts of monomers (a) plus (b) of an organic diluent selected from aliphatic hydrocarbons containing from 4 to 12 carbon atoms and alicyclic hydrocarbons containing from 5 to 8 carbon atoms; and (d) from 0À01 to 1.0 parts by weight per. 100 parts of monomers (a) plus (b) of free radical polymerization initiator at a temperature of from 0‹ to 150‹ C. for at least 2 hours and recovering normally solid vinyl ester copolymer having a particle size of from 0À50 to 50 microns as a non-aqueous dispersion in an organic diluent. The products can be alcoholysed and are used to cast films or as adhesives.
