Abstract

1,211,442. Electrostatic charging apparatus. RANK XEROX Ltd. April 1, 1968 [April 6, 1967], No.15532/68. Heading G2H. Electrostatic charging apparatus for applying a negative charge to a xerographic plate 11 having a photo-conductive surface 12 on a conductive substrate 13 comprises a direct current source 14, an elongated corona discharge electrode 17 connected to the negative terminal of the source 14 and a field generator 16 which produces a field perpendicular to a line between the corona electrode and the insulating surface. The potential applied to electrode 17 causes positive ions surrounding the electrode to move towards the electrode to ionize neutral gas molecules to produce additional ions which are accelerated to produce more ions. The negative ions and electrons produced are repelled by the negative potential on the electrodes and migrate towards plate 11 to produce a uniform negative charge on the plate 11. The alternating current applied to the electrode produces a circular magnetic field around the electrode the direction of which depends on the direction of current Figs.2A and 2B. The negative ions and electrons are subject to fibres C y and C x , such that they tend to disperse in a flame along the length of the electrode. In another embodiment an alternating current source 22 Fig.3 is connected to field generators 26 which produce an alternating electric field between corona wire 27 and plate 23 parallel to the wire 27. In a further embodiment, Fig.4 (not shown) two alternating current sources (28, 29) are provided the source (29) being connected to field generators (32).
