Abstract

1,211,250. Weed cutter. R. PARKER-JERVIS and J. COLE. 25 June, 1969 [12 July, 1968], No. 33427/68. Heading A1F. Apparatus for cutting weeds and the like, and particularly for use in plantations of young trees, comprises a frame 12 forming part of a self-propelled vehicle or, as shown, attached to the three-point linkage of a tractor, two cutters mounted on the frame so as to be movable in a vertical direction and a transverse direction and power driven control means for controlling these cutter movements. A main beam 23 is pivotally attached to the lower beam 14 of the frame 12 and has attached a support frame 27 molunting two castor wheels, the wheels being vertically adjustable. An hydraulic ram 26 connecting the top girder 13 of the frame 12 and the mid-point of the main boom 23 raises or lowers the boom about pivot 24. A cutter support frame pivoted to the rear of the boom by pivot 40 comprises plates 39 rigidly connected, members 46, 47 pivotally attached by pivot pins 60 to the plates 39 and two upright girders 41, 42 connected to the plates 39 and interconnected by a transverse member 43 whose ends are connected to the lower ends of members 46 and 47 by hydraulic rams 61 and 62 respectively. The cutters 50, 51 attached to the members 46, 47 can be moved transversely by contraction of the rams 61, 62 and lifted vertically by ram 26, the operation of the rams being controlled by an hydraulic control box 19. Flail chain cutters are used preferentially, driven by hydraulic motors 48, 49. Swinging movement of the cutters in a longitudinal direction about the pivot 40 is limited by chains 63.
