Abstract

1,211,163. Cutting glass filaments. OWENSCORNING FIBERGLAS CORP. 4 Oct., 1968 [4 Oct., 1967], No. 47266/68. Heading C1M. Apparatus for cutting continuous strands 106 of glass fibres into short lengths 107, comprises a cutter roll 52, a cot roll 60 having a surface of resilient material 62, means 60, 87 for delivering strands 106 to be cut between the rolls 52, 60, blades 53 extending generally radially from the cutter roll 52 in circumferentially spaced relation, longitudinally extending notches 102 in the resilient material 62 in spaced relation circumferentially around the cot roll 60, the rolls 52, 60 being connected for synchronous rotation and being so proportioned and positioned and the blades 53 and notches 102 so matched that the blades 53 enter the notches 102 so as to contact the surface of the notches during their presence in the notches. The cot roll in unused condition may contain no notches which are then cut by the blades in use. Preferably the cot roll is driven and forms the pull roll of a glass filament drawing apparatus (Figs. 1, 2) and is relatively large compared with cot roll 60. As shown, cutter roll 52 is mounted by end shafts 55, 56 in bearings 57, 58 in a casing 50 and is driven by pulley 99 and belt 100. Cot roll 60 is resiliently mounted to press against roll 52 by shaft 65 resting in bearings 67, 68 in the upper ends of rocker arms 68, 69 carried by a pivot shaft 71 turnable in bearings in the casing 50. A central collar 75 fixed to shaft 71 carries an upright arm 82 pressed by spring 83 adjustably mounted by screw 84 and nut 85 and movement of shaft 71 is limited by a stop arm 76 engaging a set screw 78 positioned by nut 80. Preferably the blades 53 are parallel and slightly angled as shown and are held in precise position by end plates 110, 111. The material of cover 62 is preferably polyurethane.
