Abstract

1,211,114. Mixing liquids in proportions; spray producers. OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS CORP. 30 Jan., 1968, No. 4766/68. Headings B1C and B2F. Spraying apparatus. An airless, air-operated and/or electrostatic spray gun 10 is supplied through the mixing head 18 with resin and catalyst metered by single-acting positive displacement pumps 38, 46 having a common device and drawing from pressurised and unpressurssed containers 26, 42 respectively. The pump outputs and the component ratio (which may be, e.g. (100:1) may be controlled by adjustment of pump piston stroke. Flushing liquid may be supplied to the mixing head 18 by pumps 74, 77 and lines 72, 76. The spray gun trigger 12 opens the mixture supply valve 14 and also actuates a switch 20 to energize a spray charging electrode 24 from a powerpack 22. When trigger 12 is released an interval timer 124 is set in operation and after a predetermined waiting period (of e.g. 2-10 minutes) causes the pumps 74, 77 to supply flushing liquid for a period (e.g. ¢ to 1¢ minutes) determined by a duration timer 130. If during the delay period the trigger 20 be operated to perform another spraying operation, the interval timer is reset by pressure switch 126. Mixing apparatus. In the mixing head 18, see Fig. 3, resin is supplied to a passage 78 and thence to a chamber 80 which is separated from a mixing chamber 102 by a disc 82 having passages 94 there-through (see also Figs. 6 and 7, not shown). Catalyst is supplied to a passage 92 and thence to an annular chamber 90 round the disc, there being radical passages 98 in the disc connecting the annular chamber to each of the passages 94. The separate streams of catalyst are thus each mixed with a stream of resin in the passages 94, the streams of mixture combining in mixing chamber 102 and passing to the spray gun through a passage which may contain a spiral mixing vane (not depicted). Lines 72, 76 supply flushing liquid when required to the passages 78, 92 in the mixing head.
