Abstract

1,210,447. Benzilic acid esters. AGRIPAT S.A. 13 May, 1968 [17 May, 1967], No. 22547/68. Heading C2C. [Also in Division A5] The invention comprises benzilic acid esters of the formula in which R denotes an unsubstituted or halogensubstituted alkyl, alkenyl or alkinyl group of up to 4 carbon atoms and n is 0 or 1. The esters are obtainable by rearranging bromochlorobenziles under alkaline conditions to yield bromochlorobenzilic acids or salts thereof, which are then esterified. Examples are given. The products are useful as acaricides and insecticides (see Division A5). Bromochlorobenzils for use as starting materials are obtainable by oxidizing bromobenzylchlorophenyl ketones or chlorobenzyl-bromophenyl ketones, suitably with selenium dioxide.
