Abstract

1,209,983. Composite casting processes. E. KEMMING. 20 Sept., 1968 [22 Dec., 1967], No. 44909/68. Heading B3F. [Also in Division C7] Welding rods are prepared by stirring a solid particulate carbide into a melt and drawing off the melt into heat resistant vacuum tubes. The melt used contains in wt. per cent. The preferred carbide is tungsten carbide which may be added to comprise up to 40% but, preferably, at least 7% by weight of the mixture based upon the total weight of the mixture. The tungsten carbide used may be made by alloying the elements (W 2 C) or by a sintering process (WC) and preferably contains Mo, Ti, Ta and/or Nb carbides in the form of mixed crystals to increase its stability in the melt. If sintered tungsten carbide is used this should be added to the melt before the chromium. A melt containing 70% wt. Co and 30% wt. Cr (the Cr containing 2À2% wt. C) was prepared and pulverized W 2 C of a grain size from 2 to 5 microns was introduced into the melt while the melt was stirred inductively. The resulting suspension at 1400‹ to 1750‹ C. was drawn off into quartz tubes by a vacuum and allowed to solidify.
