Abstract

1,209,377. Lamps. I. G. TALTAVULL. 31 July, 1968, No. 36635/68. Addition to 1,088,579. Heading F4R. A lighting fitting comprises a lamp 1, a moulded transparent block 2 which surrounds the lamp and is formed with annular prisms on its outer surface, and a reflector 6 which receives upwardly directed light from the lamp and re-directs it downwardly so that it does not fall on the prisms. The prisms are of two kinds and are so arranged that the two large upper prisms 4, 5 operate by total internal reflection whilst the small lower prisms 3 operate by refraction only, the lower faces of the large prisms being shaped so that the light leaving the prism 4 is divergent and the light leaving the prism 5 is convergent and thereby clears the edge of the prism 4. The reflector 6 has a section composed of a plurality of circular arcs, the arcs nearer to the axis of symmetry and to the outer rim of the fitting being of smaller radius than the intermediate arcs. The reflector is supported by rods 14 secured to a rim 9 on the mast 10, and the spaces between the rods are filled by transparent sectors 18 which rest in slots 12 in the rim and are held at the top by a member 21 movable upwardly against the bias of springs 23 to release the sectors. The block 2 is supported on the member 21 by arms 25. The inner surface of the block may be provided with vertically extending prisms (Fig. 5, not shown) so that the polar curve of light intensity takes on an elongated shape suitable for street lighting. Cooling air enters the fitting through holes 11 and leaves through the gap between the top of the sectors and the reflector.
