Abstract
1,209,342. Measuring displacement. OLYMPUS KOGAKU KOGYO K.K. 3 Jan., 1968 [22 March, 1967; 20 Sept., 1967], No. 531/68. Heading G4H. [Also in Divisions G2-G3] A device for measuring displacement amounts by superimposing the image of a portion of a diffraction grating G upon another portion includes a real image optical system of unit magnification in turn including a reflection optical system arranged such that a light beam l 1 , incident upon a portion of the grating G, is directed by mirorrs M 1 , M 2 outside the grating in a direction opposite to that of the beam l 1' and is then directed by mirrors M 3 , M 4 to the grating in the same direction as the incident light beam. This super position produces a moirÚ fringe pattern the strength of which varies sinusoidally in response to displacement of the grating, the pattern being observed by a photoreceiver p and the strength variations causing electrical pulses which can be counted to indicate the amounts of displacement of the grating. As shown, the grating is moved linearly, and the optical system gives an inverted real image. In another embodiment (Figs. 6- 9, not shown), an optical system using prisms which give a mirror image is used with an an annular rotatable grating. Deviations of either grating from a plane do not affect the fringe pattern.
