[Also in Division D1] A method of fabricating a pliable braided polyfilamentous textile material from a plurality of drawn synthetic resin filaments having elastic memory, comprises the steps of individually hot stretching each said filament to reduce its elastic memory, and braiding the plurality of the hot-stretched filaments into the polyfilamentous textile material. Preferably, the textile material is in the form of a strand or a thread. In the preferred embodiment, a pliable braided polyester strand or thread is made by providing a plurality of drawn polyester filaments having elastic memory, individually hotstretching each said drawn filament at a temperature in the range of from the glass transition temperature thereof to the softening point thereof to elongate the filament in the range of from a minimum of 20%, based on its prestretched length, to just below the breaking point, and subsequently braiding the plurality of hot-stretched filaments into the braided strand or thread. In examples, hot-stretching is effected in one stage, using platens at 450‹ F. The hot-stretched filaments may be lubricated prior to braiding, suitably by coatingby passing each through a dispersion of minute particles of "Teflon" (Registered Trade Mark) dispersed in water, with or without a suitable wetting agent. The braided thread may be sterilized, and is suitable for use as a surgical suture.
