Abstract

1,208,879. Electrical sockets. AMP Inc. 25 June, 1969 [15 July, 1968], No. 32032/69. Heading H2E. An electrical socket comprises a contact spring assembly 7 enclosed by a sleeve 12, which are formed from portions 1, 3 of a metal blank B. The portion 3 has spring contact forming strips 10 and is rolled to form the contact spring assembly 7 with a pin receiving mouth 11. Assembly 7 is doubled over at neck 2 to lie with mouth 11 along edge 4A of the portion 1, which is then rolled about assembly 7 to form the sleeve 12. The sleeve may be tapered to fit tightly over part 2A of neck 2. The portion 1 may be dimensioned such that a partly doublewalled sleeve is provided, Figs. 6, 7 (not shown), this preventing ingress of solder and also providing a greater resilience to the sleeve. The contact springs may be offset axially to lessen the pin insertion force required, or may be helically formed, Figs. 10, 11 (not shown). An electrical connector assembly, Fig. 8, has rows of holes 20 in the insulating carrier 15, through which the sockets are pushed. Modular electrical unit 25 with pins 24 is inserted into, and held by, the resilient sockets. This combined unit may be mounted on a printed circuit Fig. 9 (not shown) with the sockets being dip soldered to the respective conductors of the printed circuit through which they project.
